Southern Food: Fried Catfish

On August 15, 2011 · Comments Off

Fish fries are a southern tradition.  Fried catfish is one of my favorite southern food recipes.  It’s very simple to make and doesn’t take much time either.  Southern fried catfish is a necessity at a fish fry.

 What you’ll need:

  • 12 skinless catfish fillets
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste
  • a dash of lemon pepper
  • 5 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups of cornmeal
  • oil
  • 2 sliced lemons

Start by preheating your cooking oil to 350 degrees.  Season both sides of each catfish fillet with salt, pepper, and lemon pepper seasoning.  In a medium bowl, mix flour and cornmeal and blend well.  Coat the catfish fillets evenly with the flour and cornmeal mixture.  Fry the catfish fillets for about 8 minutes or until done.  Drain grease on a paper towel-lined plate.  Serve hot with sliced lemons.

Fried catfish fillets go great with fried hush puppies.  If you want to add a little extra spice to your hush puppies, try adding diced jalapenos to the mix.  French fries and a fruit salad would also go well.  Southern style coleslaw is always a perfect side at any fish fry.  To complete the meal for your fish fry, offer key-lime pie for desert.
